Maridi County High Court has sentenced a 17 – years – old man to 10 years in jail for molesting a six – years – old girl at Muku 11 residential area on Sunday morning.

First – grade judge at the court said he found the perpetrator guilt undersection 247 of the South Sudan penal code, 2008.

Police Inspector of Maridi County Emmanuel Laku said since the closer of schools in the county due to the coronavirus pandemic, they had registered 34 rape cases within a period of six months; at the rate of one or two cases a day.

Siting the closer of schools as the cause of the rape crimes and child pregnances, Laku urged parents and the Maridi communities in general to take care of their children during the COVID 19 pandemic lockdown.

“I want to urge you all the parents and the communities of Maridi to take care of your young girls; you should not leave your children alone at home,” he advised.

The police Inspector told parents and the community to report any rape cases to the police instead of trying to solve it at home.

“We should stop the culture of solving rape cases at home; it is a crime according to the law,” he said.

The police officer also warned the youth in the county to distance themselves from using drugs and respect their communities, calling on them to be exemplary of good behavior.

“I want to tell you the youth of Maridi … to open your eyes; we are working to reduce the rape cases by sending the wrong people to prison,” he warned.
